Captain's Library BEETLEJUICE "Never a Doll Moment"

With a sequel (finally) about to be released...

...we thought we'd present a never-reprinted comic tale from three decades ago featuring the garrulous ghoul and Lydia...which includes the creative team's take on...Barbie!
Written by Angelo DeCesare, penciled by Howie Post, and inked by Ken Selig, this tale appeared in Harvey's Beetlejuice Holiday Horror Day Special #1 (1992).
Oddly, a simple caption change would've changed his search for a birthday present into seeking a Christmas present, which would've been more seasonally-appropriate, but nobody bothered to do so!
Also note that the native "witch doctor" and his kid are orange, making them appear to be related to Willy Wonka's Oompa Loompas!
(The book was Comics Code Authority approved!)
The comic was based on the syndicated spin-off animated series which toned-down certain aspects from the film to make it "kiddie-friendly".

(Remember this was before Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and Toonami and non-broadcast venues like streaming services which could've shown a series closer in tone to the film.)

Before X-MEN '97! Before X-MEN the Animated Series! There was X-MEN "Pryde of the X-Men"!!!

When you tune in to X-Men '97 on Disney+ tomorrow...

...ask yourself what do you know about what led to it...even before the now-legendary animated TV series aired in the mid-1990s...

...with a then-heavily-promoted pilot by Marvel Animation, New World Studios, and Toei Entertainment that aired in syndication during September 1989.
Marvel Comics devoted much of their monthly "prozine" Marvel Age's 63rd issue to the project (including a new cover by the pilot's primary character designer Russ Heath which was also used for the first VHS release of the cartoon)!
Here's the main article...
(Note the panels running along the bottom of the pages are actually from a storyboard used during production)
In addition, there was an animators' size-comparison chart...
...and the issues's back cover was an illustration showing the characters'...backsides!
Two special treats for you...
First, the centerfold from this issue of Marvel Age by ever-amazing writer/artist Fred Hembeck about the fan anticipation for the pilot...
...and here's the pilot itself!
Note, it's from an EP (6-hour speed) VHS release.
(The slower the speed, the poorer the quality!
But a studio could fit more shows and/or movies on a single video cassette at a bargain price!)
Don't Miss X-Men '97!

Captain's Library & Theatre KING KONG "Kong meets P T Bunkum"

With a new King Kong movie featuring him and some other big guy hitting screens tomorrow...
...we're going to have a look at the only comic book story based on the first King Kong animated series from 1966...

...which was an indirect sequel to the first match-up of the two kaiju titans!

The animated series then led to another (Godzilla-less) Kong feature film...

...using elements from the animated series including the villain, Doctor Who!
the animated version
the live action version
No, not the BBC's Time Lord...
...but a decidedly-hammy human villain!
Two interesting American-Japanese links to the tv series and movie.
1) The series, though produced by Rankin-Bass was animated by Toei Animation, making it the first anime specifically-produced for America!
2) The movie was a co-production of Rankin-Bass and Toho Studios., using characters and plot elements from the cartoon series including Doctor Who and MechaniKong!
Though it uses King Kong, it is not a sequel to King Kong vs Godzilla, and no reference is made to events of the earlier film.
Now, back to the comic...
While the writer is unknown (and the story may be adapted from one of the episodes), the art is believed to be penciled by Sol Brodsky and John Verpoorten and inked by Frank Giacoia.
If those names seem familiar, it's because the one-shot comic this tale appeared in, America's Best TV Comics (1967), was packaged by Marvel for ABC!
Besides abridged reprints of Fantastic FourSpider-Man, and Casper tales, the 68-page comic featured the first (and only) strips based on the animated Journey to the Center of the EarthKing Kong, as well as George of the Jungle's first comic book appearance!
