Preston, Esq and Ted "Theodore" Logan are assisted by temporal traveller Rufus in creating oral reports that will keep them from flunking out of high school, thereby changing history since, if they flunk out, their band, Wyld Stallyns, will never form, and their music won't save the world!
Rufus uses his time machine, disguised as a phone booth...

(No, not that phone booth!)

...to grab famous figures from history!

And if you want more of an explanation than that, you obviously have never seen either of the previous films, the animated or live-action TV series, the comics, and/or the video games!

Well, that's a matter of opinion...

When Last We Saw Our Most Noble Heroes...

Bill and Ted try to write a history report, desperate to pass at least one class or they will flunk out of high school and Ted's father will transfer him to an Alaskan military academy,

Rufus, a temporal traveler from the year 2688, arrives to provide them a time machine which allows them to travel back in time and meet historical figures in order to learn about key historical events.

If Bill and Ted fail to pass, their teacher will have to flunk them and  which will lead to their band, Wyld Stallyns never forming, in turn destroying a Utopian future built around their music.

The dim duo travel back in time, grabbing Napoleon Bonaparte, leaving him with Ted's brother, then retrieving Western gunfighter Billy the Kid...

Needless to say, this most-magnificent tale continues...

If the adaptation looks almost like a MAD magazine spoof, that's because MAD artist Angelo Torres was second only to fellow MAD artist Mort Drucker at doing dead-on likenesses!

The fact DC (who did this movie adaptation) owned MAD might have been the reason Torres was able to do this despite his exclusive contract!

BTW, this comic was not released as a movie tie-in, but as a video tie-in when the flick was released to home video!
