And the Oscar Goes To...

...a genre film and a genre director?
WTF just happened???
Not that I'm complaining, mind you!
I've loved Guillermo Del Toro's work since Cronos!
His fanboy-turned-movie professional career arc offers hope that any of us can follow in his footsteps.
And, unlike that other example of the same phenomenon, Quentin Tarantino, Del Toro doesn't crib shot-by-shot from previous work!
Yes, there's inspiration, but no direct swiping!
Congratulations, Guillermo!
You've more than earned the accolades!

  1. Just went to see this one. Loved it for what it was, a sweet fairy tale with a true monster, and I don't mean the Gill-Man. Compelling!

  2. Michael Shannon plays villains superbly.
He was a worthy successor to Terrance Stamp as Zod!
Note: the Blu-Ray of Shape of Water is out this week!
It doesn't have a commentary track and Del Toro eplains why...
"“It’s one of the Blu-rays that has a lot of behind-the-scenes making-of featurettes and stuff like that.
It’s the first Blu-ray that I’ve made that I refused to do a commentary track on.
And it’s because I feel, for the first time, I think whatever the movie does it does on its own.
You can buy The Art Of book or come to an evening with the movie and I’ll talk—I’m not refusing to talk—but I don’t need to put it on a commentary track.”
(There's still lots of other goodies on there, just no commentary track!)
