When Last We Left 1960s TVs' Most Famous Secret Agents...

...actually, I'll let the ACT II splash page synopsis of this story from Man from U.N.C.L.E. #14 (1967) tell the tale...

Story probably by Dick Wood (who wrote most of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. comics), pencils definitely by Mike Sekowsky, inks probably by Mike Peppe.

As you can see, things have taken a decidedly campy turn since issue #1.
The tv show itself had gone camp due to the astounding success of the Batman tv series and most other fantasy/sci-fi shows also went "over-the-top", in some cases (the Irwin Allen shows Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Lost in Space in particular), becoming almost parodies of themselves.

...due to the ratings success of the legendarily-campy Batman tv series.
Unfortunately, the comics followed suit, as you can see from issue #14 (1967)...

When Last We Left our Heroes...

An assassination attempt on U.N.C.L.E. agent Napoleon Solo's life and the murder of an old friend from Interpol lead to a THRUSH plot to overthrow the newly-established government of Mawzi using a rebel group as cats-paws.
But why would THRUSH be interested in an African country recently freed from European colonial rule?
Solo and Kuryakin travel to Mawzi, where several attempts are made on their lives.
Following one of the unsuccessful assassins leads them to a secret meeting where...

Don't you just love irony?
It's an interesting tale, going for more of a feature-film "epic" feel than the tv series could afford, and ending with the situation being resolved without direct involvement from our heroes!

Captain's Library: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. "Explosive Affair" Part 1

In the days when Sean Connery was James Bond, and every organization (good or bad) had A.C.R.O.N.Y.M.S., spies were everywhere, including television and comics!
So, why not do a comic about the hottest TV spies?

We'll find out what the meeting's about...tomorrow!

Written by either Dick Wood or Paul S Newman, illustrated by Don Heck and Mike Peppe, with some minor likeness correction by Werner Roth.
(Trivia: Heck and Roth would re-team on several issues of the 1960s run of Uncanny X-Men!)

You'll note that while Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) is dead-on, both Illya (David McCallum) and their boss, Mr Waverly (Leo G Carroll) are a little "off".

Plus, Solo is using a Luger rather than the "UNCLE Special" which became a standard weapon during the first season.

This tale, from #1 in the comic series came out in Jan-Feb of 1965.

Allowing for a 3-4 month "lead time", the tale would've been written and drawn in late Fall 1964.

At that point, the show had just debuted on NBC, and the stories being aired were still based primarily on Solo and that week's guest star, with Illya having little or no participation.
Photographic reference would be primarily of Robert Vaughn with the props/weapons from the pilot and early episodes, which would explain why certain elements are "correct" and some aren't.
